Repair or Replacement

Repair vs. Replace a Cracked Windshield

Some windshield damage can be repaired. Other cracks are too large, deep or poorly located for a reliable repair. These are the factors a professional usually evaluates.

When Repair May Be Possible

Small stone chips and limited cracks are more likely to be repair candidates when the damage is recent, clean and away from a critical edge or viewing area. Resin repair is intended to stabilize the damaged area and improve appearance, although the blemish may not disappear completely.

The final decision depends on the exact damage and the servicing company’s repair standards.

  • Small, localized impact damage
  • Damage that has not spread extensively
  • Damage away from severely stressed windshield edges
  • Glass that is not shattered or separating

When Replacement Is More Likely

Replacement is more likely when a crack is long or spreading, reaches the windshield edge, creates significant visual distortion, involves several impact points or compromises multiple layers of laminated glass.

Replacement may also be recommended when previous repair attempts, contamination or severe pitting make a durable repair impractical.

Do not wait for a small crack to become a long one. Heat, cold, road vibration and another impact can cause damage to spread.

Location Matters as Much as Size

Damage near the perimeter of the windshield can be more concerning because the edge is a high-stress area. Damage directly in the driver’s primary viewing zone may also be handled more conservatively because even a successful repair can leave some optical distortion.

If you are unsure, take a clear photo and request an evaluation rather than assuming the glass must be replaced.

Modern Windshields Add Another Consideration

A windshield can include acoustic layers, antennas, rain sensors and brackets for advanced driver-assistance cameras. If replacement is required, the correct glass and any required camera calibration should be part of the service discussion.

For vehicles with ADAS equipment, ask the servicing company how calibration requirements are identified and documented.
